These days, on Super Bowl Sunday, Hollywood televises the new trailers for several of their hottest upcoming movies during the NFL championship game. This year saw spots for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Transformers: Age Of Extinction, Need For Speed, 24: Live Another Day, Noah, Muppets Most Wanted, The Monuments Men, Pompeii, Draft Day, and 3 Days To Kill. And while Spider offered at least some competition it was clear that Captain America: The Winter Soldier had the best trailer by a mile, because it set a tone and a mood, where most of the other contenders only showed expensive CGI and blew shit up.
While the 30 second Super Bowl spot was already impressive, this extended trailer really blew viewers away. It plays up the Winter Soldier and once again explores what seems to be the central theme of the movie: the dichotomy between our definition of freedom and the one we had during the 1940’s. Captain America, himself a remnant of the past, must adjust to this world and face a part of his history that comes back to haunt him. The Winter Soldier promises to be part superhero action film, part political thriller, and this trailer really makes you believe it has succeeded.
